Horsham Council Urging Residents To Dispose of Batteries Properly
A fire recently broke out in one of Horsham District Council’s waste lorries which was caused by batteries in one of its waste collection vehicles. Thankfully, the waste collection team were able to control the situation with fire extinguishers and return to Hop Oast Depot where the contents of the lorry was emptied. While this situation was luckily controlled, not disposing of batteries properly is very dangerous and can cause fires both in waste lorries and on landfill. Make sure that batteries you need to get rid of are disposed of at a collection point. In Horsham, the Tesco Express on Brighton Road has a batteries collection point. Plastics washed up at Seven Sisters recycled into useful products
Since 2021, staff and volunteers at Seven Sisters have been litter picking once a week for plastics and litter that often comes in with the tide. Now, the litter pickers have teamed up with ReAP, a charity that works to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the planet’s aquatic life and ecosystems. As well as Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) which recycles lost or littered material. The partnerships means that around three quarters of the litter collected by staff and volunteers can be recycled. Sussex World reports that this year alone, teams have collected 34kg of plastics. With the new partnership, over 25kg of that waste can now be recycled. How ReAP works The charity works with MyRefactorty and takes the litter to its hub in Sussex and turns the litter into re-useable materials which can help to make recycling bins, seating, display boards and outdoor tables. Yesterday (30th January 2024), West Sussex County Council announced that a booking system will be in place for all of its recycling centres from 12th February.
